We grew and we are already a team of 150 people. We were elected the best newspaper in Portugal for two consecutive years, we have more than 100,000 active users using the Apps, 50 million pages served per month, tens of thousands of paid subscribers, a 24/7 FM radio in Lisbon, Porto and online and some of the most listened to Podcasts in Portugal.The missionA functioning democracy, with freedom and pluralism, needs free and independent information as one of its core pillars. Journalism has this essential role, and cannot depend financially either on the government or on large interest groups. The best way to guarantee this journalism, and to do it with quality and depth, is through the contribution of readers. It is to these that we want to respond, and it is in order to do this even better that we opened this position.The challengeWe want to go further. We want to be more dependent on our readers who choose to subscribe to our newspaper, and less dependent on advertising. This means improving and releasing new features, with a high level of demand in terms of UX, UI and performance. It means rethinking the way our readers look at an online newspaper, looking at the best of what's done not only in leading international newspapers, but also in other information and entertainment SaaS.The teamThis position will be part of the digital team: 15 highly qualified people between UX, UI, Frontend, Backend, Apps, Product, Marketing, Analytics and Customer Support. We work in a mixed face-to-face/remote model and communicate continuously on Slack, Notion, Figma and Bitbucket. We have a simple and flexible hierarchical structure, which allows for autonomy and experimentation in all functions.The roleAs a Senior Web Designer, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day work of a web designer. This function responds to the CTO, who has an academic background in Design. The main challenge will be to iterate over the existing formats and platforms, as well as thinking from scratch, together with the team, many of the new product features included in our ambitious roadmap.We are particularly proud that Observador is one of the best designed information sites in Portugal, with its own consistent graphical language, but we know that we have to go much further.
